About the Speech:

Estonia assumed the Presidency of the Council of the European Union for the first time on 1 July 2017 at a time of great upheaval for the European Union. In the context of the Estonian Presidency, Mr Mihkelson outlined an Estonian perspective on the broader challenges ahead facing the European Union, including the future of the EU at 27. The Estonian Presidency is the first in a ‘trio’ of Presidencies which will also include Bulgaria and Austria in 2018.

About the Speaker:

Mr Mihkelson, who is an Independent politician, has been Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Estonian Parliament since 2016. He also serves as head of the Estonian Delegation to the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He previously served as Chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee on two other occasions: from 2011 to 2015 and from 2003 to 2005. He also served as Chair of the European Union Affairs Committee from 2007 to 2011.
