First meeting of new IIEA Climate and Energy Working Group takes place

The Institute of International and European Affairs was delighted to convene the first meeting of the Climate and Energy working group this Monday 30 May.

The new working group seeks to critically analyse emerging trends and key developments in climate and energy policy in Ireland, Europe and further. It will convene monthly and bring together a diverse group of Irish policy experts, thought leaders, industry representatives and members of academia to contribute innovative thinking on the most pressing issue of our time.

The IIEA’s Climate and Energy working group will be Chaired by Alex White SC and Professor J. Owen Lewis. About the first meeting of the group, Alex White SC said “I am delighted to be co-chair of the IIEA’s climate and energy working group. The group will play a major role in helping the IIEA to take a lead in facilitating a deeper debate in public discourse and to meet the public interest in sharing ideas and insights on the current climate crisis and the opportunities for clean energy and regenerative growth strategies."

Professor J. Owen Lewis said “I am delighted to be co-chair of the IIEA’s climate and energy working group. The group will play a major role in helping the IIEA to take a lead in facilitating a deeper debate in public discourse and to meet the public interest in sharing ideas and insights on the current climate crisis and the opportunities for clean energy and regenerative growth strategies."

IIEA Director General, David O’Sullivan, added “it is a great pleasure to announce the first meeting of the IIEA’s new Climate and Energy working group in the early weeks of my time as Director General at the Institute. The Institute already plays an important role facilitating well informed public debate on issues related to climate and energy policy in Ireland through our events series, and it is exciting to see this role deepened with the launch of the Climate and Energy working group at a time when Russia’s ongoing war in Ukraine, as well as successive IPCC reports, have highlighted the need for a more rapid response to the climate crisis.”

The Climate and Energy working group will allow the IIEA to facilitate greater public debate on these pressing issues by sharing ideas and insights on the climate crisis, clean energy and regenerative growth strategies in Ireland, Europe and further afield.

All discussions of the new IIEA Climate and Energy working group will be held under the Chatham House rule.
