Vision and Values: The Future of the Eurozone in a Changing World

With Spain set to receive €140 billion of funding from NextGenerationEU, the EU’s recovery fund, Vice-President of the Government of Spain and Minister for Economic Affairs and Digital Transformation, Nadia Calviño provides a Spanish perspective on the future of the euro area. Vice-President Calviño discusses the future of fiscal policy in the euro area, whether the NextGenerationEU recovery fund represents a “Hamiltonian” moment, and outline how the Eurozone can play a leading role in shaping economic policy on the international stage.

About the Speaker:

Nadia Calviño has been Second Vice-President and Minister for Economic Affairs and Digitalisation of Spain since March 2021. From 2020-2021, she served as Third Vice-President and Minister for Economy and Digitalisation and prior to that, from 2018-2020, she served as Minister for Economy and Business. Before her career in national politics, she had a distinguished career as a civil servant in the European Commission, serving as Director-General of DG Budget, Deputy Director-General with a special responsibility for Financial Services and Deputy Director-General in DG Competition with special responsibility for Mergers and Antitrust (including cartels). She holds a degree in Economics from the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and a degree in Law from the Universidad Nacional de Educación a Distancia (UNED).
