The Future of the Northern Ireland Protocol

A webinar presentation on the future of the Northern Ireland Protocol

This event, which was co-organised by the IIEA and the Cambridge series on the future of the Island of Ireland in conjunction with the Cambridge Centre for Geopolitics, expert speakers reflected on the implications and future of the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland, which was agreed as part of the UK’s EU Withdrawal Agreement, as well as on the implications of the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill, currently under consideration in the House of Lords.  

The meeting began with the presentation of a paper on the Northern Ireland Protocol Bill by Andrew McCormick, which will be followed by an expert panel discussion. 

About the Speakers

Dr Andrew McCormick is the former Director General of International Relations for the Northern Ireland Executive represented the Executive at the Specialised Committee on the Protocol. He was the NI Executive’s lead official on Brexit.  

David O'Sullivan is the IIEA’s Director General. David has formerly served as the Secretary General of the European Commission, the Ambassador of the European Union Delegation to the United States, and as the Chief Operating Officer of the EU's diplomatic service 

Professor Katy Hayward is a Professor of Political Sociology at Queen's University Belfast and Senior Fellow of the UK in a Changing Europe think tank, where she leads a major ESRC-funded project on the topic of the future and status of Northern Ireland after Brexit.
