The Artificial Intelligence Act: Finding a Balanced Approach

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is becoming increasingly pervasive throughout Europe, producing major economic and social benefits but also posing new risks and challenges. In April 2021 the European Commission unveiled new regulations in a proposed AI Act, which is now going through the EU legislative process. In her address to the IIEA, Ms Yordanka Ivanova outlines the thinking underpinning the AI Act proposal and she discusses the latest developments and debates in relation to the proposed Act.

About the Speaker:

Yordanka Ivanova is a Legal and Policy Officer in the European Commission in the unit responsible for AI Policy Development and Coordination. She is a member of the legal team who has drafted the Commission proposal for a Regulation on AI. Before joining the Commission, Yordanka worked as a researcher and attorney-at-law, advising companies on EU regulations, including in the area of data protection, consumer protection, digital services, financial services, cybersecurity and copyright.
