Priorities of the Slovenian Presidency of the EU

Slovenia assumed the Presidency of the Council of the EU on 1 July 2021, the third in the ‘GPS’ Trio Presidency that commenced with Germany in June 2020 and Portugal in January 2021. In his webinar address, Minister Logar discusses the priorities of the Slovenian Presidency, which focus on reinforcing EU resilience to current and future health threats and on the effective implementation of the Next Generation EU fund and national recovery and resilience plans. It will also prioritise the importance of rule of law in the EU, and underscore the importance of the Western Balkans region in terms of EU engagement and enlargement.

About the Speaker:

Minister Logar is the current Minister of Foreign Affairs of Slovenia and has served in the role since 2020. Before this, he was a member of the Slovenian National Assembly as a member of the Slovenian Democratic Party where he headed a commission of inquiry into abuses in the Slovenian banking system. He was also Chairman of the parliamentary Public Oversight Committee as well as a member of the Finance, EU Affairs and Foreign Policy Committees. He has also served as Minister Plenipotentiary for OECD Relations in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 2013-2014, as Director of the Slovenian Government Communication Office and he was the spokesperson of Slovenia’s EU Council Presidency in 2008. Before joining the Slovenian Government Office for European Affairs he was an advisor in the European Parliament and worked for SKB Banka. He holds a BA from the University of Ljubljana, a Master’s from Nova Univerza, and a PhD in Sociology from the School of Advanced Social Studies.
