UK Update 166

After eight years of the Brexit Brief, six and a half years after the Brexit Referendum in 2016, the IIEA presents the UK Update. These updates will aim to provide up-to-date information on UK-EU, and UK-Ireland relations, bringing together relevant statements and policy positions from key players in Ireland, the UK and the EU.

This edition of the UK Update will give a round up of the “State of Play” in Northern Ireland at the end of 2023, with a particular focus on the discussions at Hillsborough in December and the package deal put forward by the UK Government, as an incentive to restore the Executive and Assembly at Stormont. The New Year Messages from each of the Northern Ireland Parties make it clear that for most the main objective for 2024 is a return to Stormont. The Update concludes by looking at the “The Evolving Debate”, highlighting the results of a recent poll on public perceptions of Brexit nearly seven years on, and opinion articles from both the Irish News and The Guardian.
