Brexit Brief 137

The former UK Foreign Secretary, Liz Truss, was elected leader of the Conservative and Unionist Party on 5 September 2022, winning the party membership poll by 57.4% to 42.6% ahead of the former Chancellor of the Exchequer, Rishi Sunak. Her victory means that she becomes the third female Prime Minister, following Margaret Thatcher and Theresa May. The Irish Government has expressed hope that the changing of the guard in the UK might lead to a breakthrough in the deadlock over the Protocol, with Taoiseach Micheal Martin calling for “a clear and genuine signal” that a negotiated solution is a priority.
