The logic of Brexit is being brought to its inexorable conclusion with the UK’s announced intention to introduce unilateral legislation disapplying the Protocol. In Belfast, a democratic crisis looms as the DUP blocked the appointment of a Speaker for the newly elected Assembly. Meanwhile, the European Commission has spoken of “a lot of spinning by the UK” which has left Brussels unsure as to the UK’s goals. And, in an aside during a visit to Belfast, Boris Johnson has accepted that the political impasse in Northern Ireland is a "direct consequence" of the Brexit deal he signed up to.
