Brexit Brief 113

Comments from Prime Minister Johnson and Vice-President Šefčovič on the fifth anniversary of the UK’s vote to leave the EU have cast the differences which remain between both the EU and UK into sharp relief. Nevertheless, efforts to find common ground on the implementation of the Protocol on Ireland/Norther Ireland continue. Vice-President Šefčovič appeared virtually before the Northern Ireland Assembly, the first ever time a European Commissioner has addressed a sub-national legislature of a non-Member State. Shortly afterwards, the EU accepted the UK’s request for a three-month extension of the grace periods for chilled meats, but not without conditions. This edition of the Brexit Brief covers these developments, and brings together reaction from the UK, EU and Ireland.

The Brexit Brief is written by Tony Brown, IIEA Senior Fellow, on behalf of the IIEA’s UK Expert Group.
