Ireland and the UN Security Council - This Week: Week 83

Week 83, 8 – 12 August 2022

This bulletin will provide a brief analysis of last week’s meetings at the UN Security Council (UNSC), and an overview of the upcoming meetings this week.

Last week, China began its Presidency of the Security Council for the month of August.  The Council issued a Press Statement welcoming the renewed truce in Yemen.

  • On 1 August 2022, China, as Council President, held a Press Conference during which it outlined the Council’s programme of work and priorities for August. China’s priorities include promoting common security through dialogue and cooperation and the Council will be briefed on this issue on 22 August 2022.  Another signature event will be held on 8 August 2022, which will focus on supporting Africa’s capacity to build and sustain peace. During the month of August, the Council’s work will also focus on the Yemen, Libya, Haiti and Ukraine.

  • On 4 August 2022, the Council released a Press Statement, welcoming the truce renewal which took place on 2 August 2022 in Yemen. Members of the Security Council expressed hope that the full implementation of the truce and an expanded truce agreement would provide an opportunity to reach an inclusive, comprehensive political settlement, based on the agreed references and under the auspices of the United Nations.

The Week Ahead (8 - 12 August 2022)

This week, the first signature event of the Chinese Presidency of the Council will take place in the form of an Open Debate on “Peace and Security in Africa: capacity building for sustaining peace”. The Council will also hold a briefing on “Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts”, and Russia will host an Arria-formula meeting focused on working methods, specifically on the topic of ‘penholdership’.

Monday – 8 August 2022

  • The Council will hold an Open Debate on “Peace and Security in Africa: capacity building for sustaining peace”. This is the first signature event of the Chinese Presidency of August.

Tuesday – 9 August 2022

  • The Council will hold a briefing on “Threats to international peace and security caused by terrorist acts”. Under-Secretary-General (USG) for Counter Terrorism, Vladimir Voronkov, as well as the Acting Executive Director of the Counter Terrorism Executive Directorate, Weixiong Chen, will brief the Council on the 15th strategic-level report of the Secretary General on the threat posed by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (Da’esh) to international peace and security.

Wednesday – 10 August 2022

  • No official meetings.

Thursday – 11 August 2022

  • Russia intends to hold an Arria-formula meeting focused on working methods, specifically on the topic of ‘penholdership’.

Friday – 12 August 2022

  • No official meetings.
