Recent developments at the UNSC
- Ireland and Norway emphasised their support for the UN in providing humanitarian aid as co-penholders on the Syria humanitarian file in a Security Council meeting on 15 November 2021.
- The Security Council adopted a Press Statement on the Secretary-General’s Report on Iraq’s Electoral Process on 15 November 2021.
- The Security Council adopted a resolution renewing the Somalia Sanctions mandate, with an increased focus on countering Al Shabaab, on 15 November 2021.
- The Security Council adopted a resolution renewing the mandate of the UN Interim Force for Abyei (UNISFA) on 15 November 2021 and called on Sudan and South Sudan to find a lasting solution to the status of Abyei.
- Ireland pledged an additional €2 million in support of the UN Relief and Works Agency (UNRWA) and its work in supporting Palestine refugees on 16 November 2021.
- Ireland highlighted ways that the UNSC can enhance prevention in a high-level Security Council meeting on Preventative Diplomacy on 16 November 2021.
- Ireland expressed its concern at the situation of violence, fear and repression in a Security Council meeting on Afghanistan on 17 November 2021.
- The Security Council issued a Press Statement condemning Houthi seizure and intrusion into the US compound in Sana’a, Yemen, on 18 November 2021.
Monday – 22nd November
- Mexico will convene a ministerial-level open debate on Small Arms and Light Weapons. Mexican Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard will chair the meeting. Director of the UN Institute for Disarmament Research (UNIDIR) Robin Geiss and a civil society representative from Latin America are the anticipated briefers.
Tuesday – 23rd November
- Briefing, followed by consultations, on Iraq. The expected briefers are Special Representative and head of the UN Assistance Mission for Iraq (UNAMI) Jeanine Hennis-Plasschaert and a civil society representative.
- ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan will provide the court’s semi-annual briefing concerning cases in Libya.
Wednesday – 24th November
- The Security Council will convene for an open briefing, followed by closed consultations, on Libya. Special Envoy on Libya and head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) Ján Kubiš will brief. The chair of the 1970 Libya Sanctions Committee, Ambassador T.S. Tirumurti (India), is expected to present the periodic report on the committee’s activities. A civil society representative will also brief.

- No official meetings.
