Week 44, 1-5 November 2021
Recent developments at the UNSC
- The Security Council met to discuss the situation in Sudan following the military coup on 26 October 2021. Ireland condemned the coup and called for all officials to be released immediately.
- Minister Coveney expressed concern at the designation of six Palestinian NGOs as terrorist organisations by Israel on 27 October 2021.
- The Security Council issued a Presidential Statement on steps taken towards holding meaningful, inclusive elections in South Sudan on 27 October 2021.
- The Security Council met to discuss the humanitarian and political situation in Syria on 27 October 2021. Ireland and Norway highlighted the plight of Syrians and underlined their commitment to the people of Syria as co-penholders on the humanitarian file.
- At a high level Security Council meeting on co-operation between the African Union and the UN Security Council on 28 October 2021, Minister Coveney underlined the importance of this co-operation for tackling climate change, strengthening peacekeeping, and responding to crises such as Sudan and Ethiopia.
- The Security Council agreed a Press Statement on Sudan on 28 October 2021 and expressed serious concern at the military takeover.
- The Security Council adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the UN Mission in Colombia on 29 October 2021.
- The Security Council discussed the situation in Mali on 29 October 2021. Ireland reiterated the need for a political transition and an implementation of the peace agreement.
Monday – 1st November
- Mexico assumes the Presidency of the Security Council from Kenya. Council members also expect to adopt the provisional programme of work for November.
Tuesday – 2nd November
- The Security Council is expected to hold its semi-annual debate on Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH).
- Council members will convene for a private meeting to receive a briefing from Joan E. Donoghue, the President of the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
Wednesday – 3rd November
- The Security Council will hold a meeting with troop-contributing countries of the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). Special Representative for the Central African Republic and head of MINUSCA Mankeur Ndiaye is expected to brief.
- Council members will convene for consultations on the Syria chemical weapons track. High Representative for Disarmament Affairs Izumi Nakamitsu is the anticipated briefer.
Thursday – 4th November
- Special meeting of the 1373 Counter-Terrorism Committee commemorating the 20th anniversary of the adoption of Security Council resolution 1373 of 28 September 2001.
Friday – 5th November
- The Security Council and the General Assembly will vote to fill a vacancy on the ICJ.
