Recent developments at the UNSC
- In a Security Council meeting on Sudan on 14 September 2021, Ireland urged for concrete action to protect civilians.
- In a Security Council meeting on South Sudan on 15 September 2021, Ireland called for renewed political commitment to tangible gains for the civilian population.
- The Security Council adopted a Presidential Statement on the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam on 15 September 2021.
- In a Security Council meeting on Syria on 15 September 2021, Ireland & Norway welcomed increased cross line humanitarian aid deliveries as co-penholders on the humanitarian file.
- Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Simon Coveney, met with the EU Special Representative for the Horn of Africa, Dr Annette Weber, on 16 September 2021.
- The Security Council adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the UN Mission in Afghanistan until March 2022 on 17 September 2021.
- The Security Council adopted a resolution extending the mandate of the UN Investigative team to promote accountability for crimes committed by Da’esh on 17 September 2021.

Tuesday – 21st September
- The General Debate of the 76th UN General Assembly begins.
Wednesday – 22nd September
- Security Council members will hold an informal interactive dialogue on cooperation between the UN Security Council and the League of Arab States. Minister for Foreign Affairs and Defence, Simon Coveney, will chair the meeting. The anticipated briefers are Assistant Secretary-General for the Middle East, Asia and the Pacific Khaled Khiari and Secretary-General of the League of Arab States Ahmed Aboul Gheit. Algeria, Saudi Arabia and Council member Tunisia are expected to participate at ministerial level.
- Taoiseach Micheál Martin will address the Council on Foreign Relations on Ireland’s UN priorities, the transatlantic relationship and Brexit.
Thursday – 23rd September
- Ireland will convene a high-level open debate on climate change and security. Taoiseach Micheál Martin will chair the meeting. Secretary-General António Guterres and a civil society representative are expected to brief.
Friday – 24th September
- Taoiseach Micheál Martin will deliver Ireland’s national statement to the UN General Assembly.
