Recent developments at the UNSC
- Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason expressed support for the UN Mission in Mali, and noted that as co-chair of the Informal Expert Group on WPS Ireland would monitor the situation concerning women’s rights, in a Security Council meeting Monday 14 June 2021.
- Ambassador Geraldine Byrne Nason briefed UNSC members on the periodic report of the Somalia Sanctions Committee’s activities in her capacity as chair on Monday 14 June 2021.
- In a Security Council meeting requested by Ireland on the situation in Tigray on Tuesday 15 June 2021, Ireland reiterated calls for an end to violence and full humanitarian access.
- António Guterres was re-appointed to a second term as UN Secretary-General by the UN General Assembly on Friday 18 June 2021.
- The UN Special Envoy for Myanmar, Christne Schraner Burgener, called for timely action from the Security Council in response to the ongoing crisis in Myanmar stemming from the military coup in February, on Friday 18 June 2021.
Monday – 21st June
- Briefing, followed by consultations, on the UN Mission in South Sudan (UNMISS). Special Representative and head of UNMISS, Nicholas Haysom, and a civil society representative are expected to brief the Council.
Tuesday – 22nd June
- Quarterly meeting on Afghanistan via videoconference. The Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Estonia, Eva-Maria Liimets, is expected to chair the meeting. Deborah Lyons, the Special Representative of the Secretary-General for Afghanistan and head of the UN Assistance Mission in Afghanistan (UNAMA), is expected to brief. Ghada Fathi Waly, the Executive Director of the UN Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), and a civil society representative will also brief the Council.
Wednesday – 23rd June
- Briefing, followed by consultations, on the UN Multidimensional Integrated Stabilization Mission in the Central African Republic (MINUSCA). Special Representative of the Secretary-General for the Central African Republic and head of MINUSCA, Mankeur Ndiaye, and AU Commissioner for Political Affairs, Peace and Security, Bankole Adeoye, are the anticipated briefers. Representatives of the Economic Community of Central African States (ECCAS), the European Union, and the International Conference on the Great Lakes Region (ICGLR) may also brief.
- Briefing, followed by consultations, on the humanitarian situation in Syria. Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti, Chef de Cabinet to the Secretary-General, is the expected briefer.
Thursday – 24th June
- Briefing, followed by consultations, on “the situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian Question”. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Tor Wennesland, will brief the Council.
Friday – 25th June
- Briefing, followed by consultations, on the political situation in Syria. Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen will brief.
