Week 54, 17-21 January 2022
- In a Security Council meeting on Mali on 11 January 2022, Ireland condemned attacks on civilian targets and expressed support for the UN Mission in the country.
- In a Security Council meeting on Yemen on 12 January 2022, Ireland highlighted the persistent exclusion of Yemeni women from the political landscape and noted the crucial role they play in grassroots peacebuilding.
- In a Security Council meeting on Sudan on 12 January 2022, Ireland expressed its support for Sudan-led and UN facilitated talks to resolve the crisis and deliver the demands of the Sudanese people for peace and democracy.
- The Security Council adopted a Press Statement on Yemen on 14 January 2022, which condemns the Houthi seizure and detention of a UAE flagged vessel.
Monday – 17th January
- The Security Council will receive the semi-annual briefing on the ICC’s Darfur-related activities from ICC Prosecutor Karim Khan.
- Security Council members will hold closed consultations on the situation in Cyprus. Special Representative and head of the UN Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) Colin Stewart will brief.
Tuesday – 18th January
- Norway will organise a ministerial-level open debate on Women, Peace and Security under the theme “Protecting Participation: Addressing Violence Targeting Women in Peace and Security Processes”. Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anniken Huitfeldt will chair the meeting. The expected briefers are UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet, Executive Director of the NGO Working Group on Women, Peace and Security Kaavya Asoka, and a civil society representative from Afghanistan.
Wednesday – 19th January
- The Council will convene for its quarterly open debate on The situation in the Middle East, including the Palestinian question. The meeting will be held at ministerial level and chaired by Norwegian Minister of Foreign Affairs Anniken Huitfeldt. Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process Tor Wennesland will brief.
Thursday – 20th January
- Open briefing on Colombia. The anticipated briefers are Special Representative and head of the UN Verification Mission in Colombia Carlos Ruiz Massieu and a civil society representative.
Friday – 21st January
- The 2140 Yemen Sanctions Committee will hold informal consultations to discuss the final report of its Panel of Experts.
