New publication to demystify the inner workings of the European Union

As Ireland prepares to take on the EU Presidency in July, a new publication is setting out to explain the fundamentals of the European Union using the symbolism of everyday objects.   Written by Former Ambassador to the EU and UK, Bobby McDonagh, The European Union in 12 Objects is a unique guide to today’s EU institutions and its ways of working.

From a mirror to a drawer, and 10 other familiar household items in between, McDonagh draws on his in-depth knowledge of the EU, and his experience as an Irish diplomat and European official, to explain what the European Union is and how different elements work. The rich complexity of the European Union is explored in digestible chapters, making it a key resource for those, in Ireland and beyond, who have an interest in the EU, as well as a useful tool for students, scholars and the wider public.

Inspired by A History of the World in 100 Objects (BBC Radio/British Museum), the original blog series was published by the Institute of International and European Affairs (IIEA).  In cooperation with the European Commission Representation in Ireland, it has now been compiled into a publication.

This publication will be officially launched in print on Saturday, 23 May at the International Literature Festival Dublin, with its author, Bobby McDonagh in conversation with Professor Brigid Laffan, Emeritus professor at Robert Schuman Centre for Advanced Studies at the European University Institute. A digital version of The European Union in 12 Objects will also be available, including on the websites of the Representation and  IIEA.

Reflecting on his work, Bobby McDonagh said: "It is essential that European citizens are equipped to understand the complexity of the EU which is of immense importance in their lives. I hope that the fresh approach of this publication will contribute in that regard.".

Alex White, IIEA Director General, said: “We are delighted to see the IIEA blog series with Bobby McDonagh take shape as a full publication.  As Ireland prepares for the Irish EU Presidency, it is an important contribution to the wider understanding of why and how the EU works, making this knowledge both relatable and accessible.”

Peter Power, Head of the European Commission Representation in Ireland said: “Bobby has produced a masterpiece to explain Europe in simple, uncomplicated language. Ahead of Ireland's Presidency of the EU, the timing of this publication couldn’t be better. The book deserves the widest possible audience. Perfect for those new to the EU and those well-schooled in the subject.”

Bobby McDonagh represented Ireland for eight years in the Council of Ministers, including for four of those years as Ireland’s Permanent Representative (Ambassador) to the EU. He also worked for four years in the European Commission, serving in the cabinets (private offices) of two Irish European Commissioners.

The original blog series. The European Union in 12 Objects, was published on the IIEA website from January to March 2026.
