Finding Europe’s Eastern Border: The European Union in Times of War

In his address to the IIEA, Štefan Auer explored the context and consequences of the EU’s response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine and what this may mean for the future of the Union. Professor Auer contended that European attempts to overcome nationalist tendencies through technocratic measures have undermined democracy and have contributed to centrifugal tensions within the Union as outlined in his latest work, European Disunion: Democracy, Sovereignty and the Politics of Emergency (Hurst 2022).

About the Speaker:

Štefan Auer Associate Professor in European Studies at the University of Hong Kong, and an expert on nationalist movements in Central Europe, and crisis governance and (mis)management within the European Union. He has written on European affairs for the South China Morning Post, The Australian, and CNBC. His works include European Disunion: Democracy, Sovereignty and the Politics of Emergency (Hurst 2022), and Liberal Nationalism in Central Europe (Routledge, 2004), which was awarded the prize for Best Book in European Studies (2005) by the University Association for Contemporary European Studies (UACES).
