Facilitating Access to Justice in an Expansive and Developing Country: Challenges and Prospects

The IIEA will issue certificates, which can be used for the purposes of CPD.
In his speech, Chief Justice Ibrahim Hamis Juma focuses on governance issues, rule of law, and access to justice in a country with a population of 67.4 million. The Chief Justice shows how digital platforms can be used to bridge distance and facilitate access to justice for all parties across this large country, in line with the Sustainable Development Goals and relating to diversity and inclusion. Irish Aid has a long partnership with Tanzania, dating back to 1979. Its 2022-2026 strategy for Tanzania aims to advance Ireland's values and interests in terms of support for peace, prosperity, and equality, with a special focus on the rights of women and girls.
About the Speaker:
Professor Ibrahim Hamis Juma is the Chief Justice of The United Republic of Tanzania and the Head of the Judiciary of Tanzania and the Court of Appeal. He is also the Chairperson of the Tanzania Judicial Service Commission. He is the sixth Tanzanian Chief Justice since Independence. Before joining the Judiciary in 2006, he was a Professor of Law at the University of Dar es Salaam before serving as Chairperson of the Law Reform Commission of Tanzania from 2007 to 2012. In his role as the Chief Justice of Tanzania, he oversees the performance of judicial functions of all courts, including giving direction and supervision over court sittings and the assignment of judicial duties.
Development Matters is a well-established lecture series from the IIEA, sponsored by Irish Aid. It explores critical issues in international development, providing a platform for international policy figures and thought leaders to share their insights and expertise, and in doing so to bring development issues to the attention of a wider Irish, European and international audiences. 2024 marks the fiftieth anniversary of Irish Aid.
