On 1 January 2023, Ireland celebrated the 50th anniversary of its accession to the then EEC. Meanwhile, a new Irish Government, led by Fine Gael’s Leo Varadkar TD, continues to deal with the fallout of the withdrawal from the European Union of the UK, who joined the EEC alongside us in 1973. The new Taoiseach has said that resolving the issues surrounding the Protocol on Ireland/Northern Ireland will be a “huge priority” during his stewardship of the country.
