A remarkable week in early September 2022 saw a number of momentous events take place: on Tuesday, 6 September, the appointment by Queen Elizabeth II of a new Prime Minister, Liz Truss; on Thursday, 8 September, the death of the Queen herself; and, on Saturday, the formal proclamation of her successor, King Charles III. The immediate consequences of these events overshadowed ongoing political developments in the UK’s post-Brexit relationship with Ireland and the rest of the EU.
