European Union Global Strategy : A Military View

The recently appointed Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, General Mikhail Kostarakos, argued that a new European Security Strategy is required  as a consequence of the ever-changing geopolitical environment.

The recently appointed Chairman of the European Union Military Committee, General Mikhail Kostarakos, argued that a new European Security Strategy is required  as a consequence of the ever-changing geopolitical environment. He highlighted the need for a clear set of priorities to deal with multiple and multifaceted challenges and threats  with limited resources. Finally, General Kostarakos focused on the need for Europe to assume its fair share of its own security burden and to set out a global strategy that enhances coherence between all the different tools and instruments of the European Union.

 

About the Speaker:

General Mikhail Kostarakos was appointed the Chairman of the Military Committee by the EU Foreign Affairs Council effective from 6 November 2015. Prior to this, the General was the Chief of the Hellenic National Defence General Staff from 2011 to 2015. From 1974 to 2011, the General rose from the rank of Second Lieutenant in the Artillery to Lieutenant General and was awarded an extensive list of military medals and distinctions including the Grand Cross of the Order of Phoenix and the Commander’s High Cross of the Order of Honour. General Kostarakos holds a Political Science degree from the Law Faculty of the University of Athens and an MSc in ‘Diplomatic and Strategic Studies’.
