It can be said that the future of European integration will be an extension of the past in terms of membership, agenda and interdependence, but that a number of challenges will arise in the areas of democratic legitimacy and the relationship between Eurozone and non-Eurozone member states. This speech examines the future of European integration, considering how the impetus of integration will be different in a Union as much concerned with external as internal affairs, and which will have to develop new systems and institutions to play a cohesive role on the world stage.
