The New Strategic Agenda and the Future of Europe

The Secretary of State for European Affairs of Portugal, Ana Paula Zacarias, discusses the importance of pragmatic cooperation in delivering on the priorities outlined in the EU’s Strategic Agenda for 2019-24.



In June 2019, the European Council set out a new Strategic Agenda, which will guide the work of the EU institutions over the next five years. In her address to the IIEA, Secretary of State Zacarias argues that the key to delivering these objectives lies in pragmatic cooperation. She further explores how tapping into the benefits of European diversity presents the pathway to a fair, prosperous, and sustainable Europe.

About the Speaker:

Ana Paula Baptista Grade Zacarias was appointed the Secretary of State for European Affairs of Portugal in 2017. Secretary of State Zacarias has a distinguished career in the diplomatic service, having served as Head of the EU Delegation to Brazil; Head of the EU Delegation to Colombia and Ecuador; Deputy Permanent Representative of Portugal to the European Union; Deputy Permanent Representative in the delegation of Portugal to UNESCO, Paris; and as the first resident Ambassador of Portugal to Estonia.
