Vladimír Šucha considers drivers and barriers to the use of new digital technologies in the agri-food sector and the next Common Agricultural Policy



Technological advances in computing, communications, sensing and big data analytics are essential if we are to produce enough food for 9.8 billion people by 2050 hand-in-hand with good planetary stewardship. In his address to the IIEA, Vladimír Šucha considers drivers and barriers to the use of new digital technologies in the agri-food sector. He also offers insights into the scientific and technical support the Joint Research Centre as the European Commission’s science and knowledge service provides for the agri-food sector and the Common Agricultural Policy in the EU.

About the Speaker:

Vladimír Šucha is Director-General of the Joint Research Centre (JRC) of the European Commission, its in-house scientific service. He was Deputy Director-General of the JRC between 2012 and 2013, and Director for Culture and Media in DG Education and Culture from 2006 to 2012. Before joining the European Commission, Dr Šucha was Director of the Slovak Research and Development Agency, Principal Advisor for European Affairs to the Slovak Minister of Research and Education, and Counsellor at the Slovak Representation to the EU. In parallel, he has followed a long academic and research career at different academic institutions in many countries.
