In his address, Julian King, Commissioner for Security Union, addresses the need to strengthen the resilience of the European Union’s democratic systems to cyber attacks in the run up to the European Parliament elections. He discusses the steps that the European Commission is taking to protect the democratic process in the European Union and to combat cyber attacks and potential cyber manipulation of voting behaviour.

Sir Julian King was appointed Commissioner for Security Union on 19 September 2016. He joined the Foreign & Commonwealth Office in 1985 and has held various positions, including: UK Ambassador to France (2016); Director General, Economic & Consular (2014); Director General of the Northern Ireland Office London and Belfast (2011); UK Ambassador to Ireland (2009); EU Commission Chef de Cabinet to Commissioner for Trade (2008); and UK Representative on EU Political and Security Committee, (2004). He is a graduate of Oxford University and the Ecole Nationale d’Administration, Paris.
