In his address, Mr Lehne analysed the implications for Europe of the new US administration adopting an ‘America First’ policy. Mr Lehne outlined the effect of this shift in US policy towards nationalism and protectionism on Europe’s foreign policy interests and explored the likely implications for the diplomatic interaction between the US and the EU. Finally, he examined the ways in which EU Member States are likely to respond to the new relationship.

About the Speaker:

Mr Lehne previously served as Director General for Political Affairs at the Austrian Ministry for European and International Affairs between 2009 and 2011. Prior to that position, from 2002–2008, he served the General Secretariat of the Council of the European Union as Director for the Balkans, Eastern Europe, and Central Asia. Previously, he was Head of the Task Force for Western Balkans and Central Europe.
