In his address to the IIEA, Sven Biscop evaluated the role of EU foreign and strategic power in the current multilateral order in light of recent international developments. He argued that the EU is gaining in strategic importance in the global order and has the capacity to “transform, rather than simply preserve” the existing multilateral system.

 

About the Speaker:

Dr Sven Biscop is Director of the Europe in the World Programme at Egmont – Royal Institute for International Relations, a leading think tank in Brussels. He is also a Professor at Ghent University, where his research and teaching focus on the strategies of the European Union and NATO. He is an Honorary Fellow of the EU’s European Security and Defence College (ESDC). In 2017 he was awarded the order of merit of the Republic of Austria (Großes Ehrenzeichen für Verdienste). He graduated from Ghent University (Belgium) in 1998, winning the best thesis award for his work on European defence, and defended his doctoral dissertation in Ghent in 2002.
