WEBINAR: Regulating Digital Services and Digital Markets
Tuesday, 1 December | 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
In her address, Ms Canenbley will outline why new legislation is needed to respond to the way in which digital technologies have profoundly changed society. She will argue that although online platforms and digital services have brought many benefits for European citizens, they have also created new risks and posed systematic problems. These problems include illegal online content such as hate speech or disinformation and problems relating to contestability, fairness, and the capacity of large online platforms to act as gatekeepers. The European Commission is preparing a Digital Services Act and Digital Markets Act, both due to be unveiled on 2 December 2020, to propose clear rules for Digital Services and Online Platforms in order to address these challenges.
About the Speaker:
Christiane Canenbley is the Deputy Head of Cabinet for the European Commission Executive Vice President for A Europe Fit for the Digital Age, Margrethe Vestager. She was previously the Digital Single Market Adviser in the team of European Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker. In Jean-Claude Juncker’s team she was also in charge of the multiannual financial framework and for relations with Germany and Austria. Prior to this she worked in the Cabinet of the former European Commissioner for Agriculture, Phil Hogan.
