WEBINAR: Misinformation Challenges for European Democracies and the Role of the European Digital Media Observatory
Tuesday, 3 November | 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
In recent years, misinformation has emerged as a growing threat to European societies and democracies. As part of the EU Action Plan against Disinformation, the European Commission established the European Digital Media Observatory (EDMO) in June 2020 to help fight against disinformation. The EDMO will act as a hub for fact-checkers and researchers and will establish networks of fact-checkers throughout Europe to counter online disinformation and support public policy. Professor Miguel Poiares Maduro, Chair of the Executive Board of the EDMO, will speak about the threat of misinformation and the role of the European Digital Media Observatory.
About the Speaker:
Miguel Poiares Maduro is the Chair of the Executive Board of the European Digital Media Observatory. He holds the Vieira de Almeida Chair in Digital Governance at the Global Law School of Universidade Católica Portuguesa. From 2013 to 2015 he was Minister Adjunct to the Prime Minister and Minister for Regional Development in Portugal. He was previously the Advocate General at the European Court of Justice and was a member of the EU High Level Group on Media Freedom and Pluralism.
