Global Europe: Challenges and Opportunities. The View from Madrid
Friday, 15 November | 12:45 pm - 2:00 pm
As a global actor, the European Union faces major challenges and opportunities. In his address to the IIEA, Dr Powell will explore the Union’s role in an increasingly volatile and unpredictable world, in which the survival of the rules-based international order that has served Europe so well can no longer be taken for granted. In particular, he will examine how the EU should respond to the growing US-China rivalry, the future of the transatlantic relationship, and the debate over ‘strategic autonomy’. Dr Powell will also review Spain’s contribution to the EU’s efforts to establish itself as a relevant and credible global actor.
This event is open to the public as part of the IIEA’s Future of the EU27 Project, which is supported by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Dr Charles Powell is Director of the Elcano Royal Institute, Spain’s leading international relations think-tank, and a Professor of Contemporary History at CEU San Pablo University. He has published widely on Spanish history, politics and foreign policy, with special emphasis on its European dimension. Dr. Powell obtained his D. Phil from Oxford University. In 2017, he was appointed a Companion of the Order of St Michael and St George (CMG) for his services to British-Spanish relations.
