The upcoming German Federal Elections will be crucial in setting the course for the future of the European Union, which has seen right-wing populism on the rise, but also a resurgence of pro-European sentiments. In this context, Jürgen Trittin, representing the German Greens (Bündnis 90/Die Grünen), argued that the next German government should invest in the future of Europe rather than continue current austerity politics.

About the Speaker:

Jürgen Trittin has been a member of the Committee on Foreign Affairs in the German Parliament (Bundestag) since 2014 and is a member of the NATO Parliamentary Assembly. He also serves as a deputy member on the Committee on the Affairs of the European Union and the Committee on Economic Affairs and Energy. In 2015 and 2016 he co-chaired the Commission on the financing of the nuclear phase-out in Germany. From 1998 to 2005, Mr Trittin served as Federal Minister for the Environment, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety.
