The European Commission’s Action Plans for a More Sustainable and Innovative Financial System

Olivier Guersent, Director-General of DG FISMA in the European Commission, discusses the future of sustainable finance and fintech in the EU.

In his address, Mr Guersent discusses the European Commission’s work through the Capital Markets Union to scale up the sustainable investments needed to transition to a climate neutral and circular economy. He also considers key actions to enable innovative business models to reach scale in the EU and support the uptake of fintech in the financial sector, such as innovation facilitators, crypto-assets and cybersecurity. Finally, Mr Guersent will elaborate on ways to ensure greater security and integrity in the financial system.

About the Speaker:

Olivier Guersent is the Director-General of DG FISMA, a position he has held since September 2015. He joined the European Commission in 1992, and has worked in the Directorate-General for Competition and in the private offices of various European Commissioners. Mr Guersent was Deputy Director-General of DG FISMA from 2014 to 2015, and head of the private office of Michel Barnier, then European Commissioner for Internal Market and Services, from 2010 to 2014. From 1984 to 1992, Guersent served the French Ministry of Economy and Finance under the French Competition Authority as an investigator. He holds a degree from the Institut d’Etudes Politiques de Bordeaux.
