In April 2018, the European Commission published a Communication which set out a blueprint for a three-pronged approach to increase public and private investment in Artificial Intelligence, to prepare for socio-economic changes and to ensure an appropriate ethical and legal framework. As part of this, the Commission established the Artificial Intelligence High-Level Expert Working Group (AI HLEG), which will support the creation of the European Union’s strategy on AI. Professor O’Sullivan gave an address on the opportunities and challenges for Europe in relation to AI, and the group’s progress so far.
