In his address, State Secretary Schütte talked about the need to focus on research and innovation as drivers of the digital economy and competitiveness, both on a national and European level. He presented Germany´s Hightech-Strategy as a continuously evolving and adapting framework for research and innovation in this context. Special attention was given to major innovation in the fields of Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things.    Dr. Schütte also shed some light on research and innovation policy at European level and the necessary interplay with the national level. Further reflections were given on how the shared responsibility of the European Commission and EU-Member States in research and innovation translates into practice. He concluded with some food for thought on how to better shape coherence among policies and initiatives as well as cooperation between institutions.

Dr. Georg Schütte has been State Secretary at the Federal Ministry of Education and Research since December 2009. Prior to this, he held the position of Secretary General of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in Bonn and Executive Director of the German-American Fulbright Commission in. He is a member of the Supervisory Board of the ‘Germany Trade & Invest’ foreign trade and inward investment agency.
