After the postponement of the meaningful vote scheduled for 11 December 2018, Theresa May returned to Brussels to seek further assurances from the EU to make the deal more palatable for UK MPs, particularly with respect to the Northern Ireland backstop.

Though the initial discussion at the European Council did not provide the Prime Minister with the strong assurances she sought, the EU27 are considering what tweaks, if any, can be made to the political declaration on the future relationship. Any developments ahead of the rescheduled vote, due to take place in the week beginning 14 January 2019, may prove decisive in the final outcome.

This briefing analyses the options under consideration and provides an update on the status of the meaningful vote ahead of the January deadline.
