14 October 2010
This report provides an in-depth analysis of the no side in both referenda on the Lisbon treaty. It first explores various facets of the no side, highlighting the common themes. Subsequently it examines the nature of the no vote itself, explaining the information deficit and analysing the exit poll data. Finally, it includes a fascinating review of no votes throughout Europe from the failed attempt to create the European Defence Community in 1954 to the defeat of the European Constitution in 2004.
This report is a timely reflection on the referendum experience in Ireland and will serve as a diachronic compendium of information on the different constituencies and themes of the No side in Ireland.
