13 Jul 2009IIEA Young Professionals Network Hosts Dr. Garret FitzGerald
On Monday July 13, 2009, in the last event before the summer break, the IIEA Young Professionals’ Network (YPN) welcomed Dr. Garret FitzGerald to the Network for a discussion on the Lisbon Treaty.
Following the Irish Government’s announcement of October 2 2009 as the date for the second Irish referendum on the Lisbon Treaty, the event was an extremely timely one. Dr. FitzGerald took attendees on a fascinating journey through the origins of the European Union, the ways in which Ireland and the Irish have contributed to the EU, the benefits of membership for the member states and also the values that are at the heart of the European Union. He then addressed some of the most commonly discussed issues in relation to the Lisbon Treaty making reference also to the guarantees secured by the Irish Government at the last European Council meeting.
Drawing on his extensive experience in Irish political life, Dr. FitzGerald made reference to personal experiences and accomplishments in discussing the history of the European Union and the current state of play. To listen to the full discussion click here.
About the Speaker:
Elected to Seanad Éireann in 1965 and to Dáil Éireann in 1969, Dr. FitzGerald was the seventh Taoiseach of the Republic of Ireland, serving two terms in office. In the mid-1970s, Dr. FitzGerald served as Minister for Foreign Affairs in the government of Liam Cosgrave, forging a strong relationship between Ireland and Europe in the early days of the country’s EEC membership.
About the YPN:
The Young Professionals’ Network (YPN) events cover a broad range of European and international issues, and take place once a month in an informal after-work environment. The YPN provides members with an opportunity to meet over a glass of wine and to engage with an inspirational guest speaker.

In answer to Conor: No It's not true that Great Britain has no power as a result of the Lisbon treaty. What on earth gave you that Idea?
Have any of you actually read the Lisbon treaty? What powers do you think you have lost?
So its true Great Britain has no power cus of governments think its knows wot best for us F**k of EU and leave us alone i dont want some d**k head half way round the world who thinks he knows best for our contrey and if someone thinks tony blair would make a good presdent than im leaveing the EU and liveing some where far far away he f****d up Britain and he will do the same here get lost gordon you dont know wot u r talking about.
i couldn't hear the video as i have no speakers but i have read the information on the side and the recent comments below and i agree with Adrian
:)
How many times must people say No before selfish politicians listen. I have serious issues with any government that refuses to accept the will of the majority of people. I have supported the eu but accepted that Irish people have the right to reject a european constitution. People must vote no in order to send a clear message to politicians that democracy exists in Ireland.
Charlie McCreevy said out loud what most had only admitted in private: the treaty would have been rejected in most countries had they followed Ireland's example and held a referendum on it.
