About the Speeches:

The theme of workers’ rights has been much debated in Ireland following the referendum on the Lisbon Treaty and in light of the financial crisis. EU leaders are expected to debate the issue at the June 2009 European Council.

Programme of Events:

John Handoll, partner in the Competition & Regulation unit at William Fry solicitors, gave an overview of the current legal situation of workers’ rights at EU level, including recent prominent judgments of the European Court of Justice.

Catalene Passchier, Confederal Secretary of the European Trade Union Congress (ETUC)  discussed proposals for a reform of current EU legislation and ETUC’s proposal to introduce a ‘social progress clause’ with the Lisbon Treaty.

Maxime Cerutti, member of the Social Affairs working group of Business Europe  delivered an employers’ perspective, including whether legislative reform is needed and whether the EU should consider other social models, including the Danish ‘flexicurity’ model.
