He won the Nobel Prize in physics for development of methods to cool and trap atoms with laser light. Announcing his appointment, President Obama said that Steven has blazed new trails as a scientist, teacher and administrator and is uniquely suited to be our next Secretary of Energy.

About the Event:

Dr. Chu spoke of the importance of sustainable energy for the future  and complimented Irish attempts to reach the 40% renewables target by 2020 as well as upgrading the grid.  He said that the Obama administration has placed 33 billion of the 90 billion dollars for energy infrastructure under the aegis of the Department of Energy.  He commented that there are huge opportunities in retrofitting older homes and buildings and improving the energy efficiency of factories. He also stressed the importance of developing new sources of energy such as wind, solar and changing infrastructure by upgrading the grid.  The US has invested four and a half billion dollars in the development of the smart grid.  The Obama administration sees this as a down-payment on future prosperity for the US.  He added that all countries are interested in energy security and energy independence and cautioned against over-investment in any particular form of indigenous energy.  Cooperation between countries is the way forward and sustainable energy will help us achieve the environment we want in a clean way.  He spoke of the magic of technology and the need to share technologies and policies in order to find out what works and what is beneficial for everyone around the globe.
