About the Speech: This expert workshop provided a forum for discussing agricultural policies from a medium to long-term perspective, in preparation for the OECD agricultural ministers meeting expected to take place in April 2016, and to form a view on EU Common Agricultural Policy post-2020. Major themes discussed included: farmer income and price volatility; food security and climate change; and investment in sustainable agriculture. This workshop was organised with the Netherlands Embassy, in partnership with the Irish Department of Agriculture, Food and the Marine and the Netherlands Ministry of Economic Affairs, and with participation from the OECD and the European Commission.

About the Speakers: Frank van Tongeren is currently working in the OECD’s Trade and Agriculture Directorate where he leads work on international trade- and agricultural policies. Before joining the OECD he has worked at the Agricultural Economics Institute (LEI) in The Hague, The Netherlands, where he specialised in trade and development issues.  Prof. Rogier Schulte leads Teagasc’s programme on Translational Research on Sustainable Food Production. That means that he is responsible for bringing together all the knowledge on sustainable agricultural production, and to ‘translate’ this into practical policy advice. In this capacity, he works closely with colleagues and policy makers in Ireland, the European Commission and Africa.
