About the Event:

In the wake of the British general election on 6 May, Lord Andrew Turnbull will share his opinions on the state of the UK, its economy, its politics, its relationship with Europe and its international relations.

With the confirmation of a historic coalition government between the Conservative Party and the Liberal Democrats, Lord Turnbull will focus in particular on the terms of the coalition agreement and the steps which must now be taken to tackle Britain's deficit.

About the Speaker:

Lord Andrew Turnbull is a former head of the British Civil Service, Cabinet Secretary, Permanent Secretary to HM Treasury and Permanent Secretary to the Department of the Environment.

After working as an economist for the Zambian government, he joined HM Treasury in 1970. From 1983-85 he was Economic Private Secretary to the Prime Minister. In 1988 he returned to Number 10 as Principal Private Secretary. He served as Permanent Secretary to the Department of the Environment from 1994-98 and to HM Treasury from 1998-2002. In 2002 Lord Turnbull was appointed Secretary of the Cabinet and Head of the Home Civil Service.

He entered the House of Lords upon his retirement in December 2005 and has recently been prominent in debates over reform of the Treasury and the challenges of governing in a hung parliament.
