Absolutely fantastic initiative, decent analysis of this type of data could lead to so many clever applications with positive benefits to the public.

About this Event

15 Feb 2011 @ 12:45

About the Speech:

The Open Data Initiative is a attempt to encourage every government agency and department to open its doors and data to the public so as to create more transparent, participatory and collaborative government. The initiative was pioneered in the United States by the Obama administration and in the UK, first by the Labour Party and then by the Conservative/Liberal Democrat coalition. The premise is that data collected by government should be released to the public on a regular basis. This data can then be collected, compared and put to a wide range of uses.

For example, data.gov.us, set up by the Obama Administration, gives details on every aspect of public spending by the US Federal government. In London, data released on traffic accidents led to a website which showed the location of all the traffic accidents involving bicycles on Google maps, allowing cyclists to map safer routes.

About the Speaker:

In June 2009, Nigel Shadbolt and Tim Berners-Lee were appointed as Government Information Advisors to help transform public access to UK Government information. Their work resulted in the launch of data.gov.uk.

In May 2010, the UK Coalition government appointed Mr Shadbolt to the Public Sector Transparency Board, which oversees public data release. He is also Chair of the Local Public Data Panel within the Department of Communities and Local Government, which seeks to coordinate and promote local open data release.
