About the Speech:

Drawing on the lessons from the recent Arab Spring uprisings, Morozov expressed scepticism about the popular view that the Internet is helping to democratize authoritarian regimes, arguing, with numerous examples, that it can also be a powerful tool for government surveillance, spreading nationalist and extremist propaganda and harassing dissidents. 

About the Speaker:

Evgeny Morozov is the author of "The Net Delusion: The Dark Side of Internet Freedom", which he presented at TED. Morozov is currently a visiting scholar at Stanford University,  a contributing editor to Foreign Policy and Boston Review, was formerly a Yahoo! fellow at Georgetown University and a fellow at George Soros's Open Society Institute. Morozov's writings have appeared in The Economist, The Wall Street Journal, Financial Times, Newsweek, The Washington Post, The International Herald Tribune, Prospect, The Sunday Times.
