About the Speech:

On 6th January 2011, Minister Eamon Ryan, T.D. gave a keynote address at the IIEA to mark the signature by Ireland on 3 December, 2010 of a Memorandum of Understanding with nine other European countries (Denmark, Norway, Sweden France, Germany, the Benelux countries and the UK) on the North Seas Grid initiative, one of the most ambitious transnational renewable energy projects in the world.

In his speech, the Minister elaborated on the content of the agreement and highlight its significance for Ireland and Europe. This initiative will make it possible to transmit high volumes of electricity generated from wind and wave energy in the coastal regions of Northern Europe across great distances to populous centres of demand in the heart of Europe and would constitute the first building-block of the European Supergrid.
