About the Speech:

In her address, Dr Guérot explored the evolving European narrative in Germany and the causes and consequences of Germany’s response to the Euro crisis. In particular, she discussed the breakdown of trust in the relationship between Germany and Europe that has allowed a more anti-European populist discourse to flourish. She also pointed to a variety of historical forces that have altered Germany’s European discourse including globalisation, normalisation and a generational shift in politics.
 
On Germany’s attitude to Ireland, she stressed that there is a clear distinction drawn between Greece and Ireland and argued that collective differences can be overcome if collective wisdom is put into action.

 

 

About the Speaker:

Ulrike Guérot is head of the Berlin office of the European Council on Foreign Relations. Before joining the ECFR in 2007, Dr Guérot was Senior Transatlantic Fellow with the German Marshall Fund and headed the European Union unit at the German Council on Foreign Relations. She is currently leading the ECFR’s project on Germany in Europe. She has also worked in academia and has published widely on European integration. She has been awarded the prestigious ‘Ordre pour le Merite' for her engagement on European integration.
