Over the last 150 years, the global media and communications sectors experienced recurrent cycles of open and closed phases of innovation and consolidation: the broadcasting, telephone, film, computing, and network industries all display similar patterns of convergence. This keynote presentation was based on Prof. Wu’s forthcoming book, which offers a new perspective on the cycle of innovation in media. In his presentation, Prof. Wu outlined and explained the drivers of innovation and synergies that exist between converging media platforms.

About the Speaker:

Tim Wu is a professor at Columbia Law School, the chairman of media reform organisation Free Press, and the co-author of ‘Who Controls the Internet?’ (Oxford U. Press, 2006). He is noted for coining the phrase ‘Net Neutrality’ which has become a highly influential principle in internet governance. Wu was recognised in 2008 as one of 50 leaders in science and technology by Scientific American magazine. In 2007, Wu was listed as one of Harvard University’s most influential graduates by 02138 magazine.
