Modern Chinese nationalism has its origins in the late nineteenth century, not 1919 as Mr Pei asserts. The nationalist sentiments espoused by Chinese intellectuals in the wake of the Sino-Japanese War 1895 is one example, and a broader grass roots nationalism can be identified as late as 1905 with the student-merchant boycott of US goods (as a result of US discriminatory of overseas Chinese).
