IIEA Brussels Branch Event

Venue:     Permanent Representation of Ireland, Rue Froissart 50
Date:        Monday 7 June 2010
Time:       19h – 20.30h (followed by wine reception)

The IIEA continues to explore the implications of the entry into force of the Lisbon Treaty. The Lisbon Treaty gives the EU, for the first time, competence to act in the area of sport. It is therefore appropriate that members and friends of the IIEA are given the opportunity to become better informed of the various issues that arise in relation to the exercise of this new competence.

We are delighted and honoured to have had a distinguished panel of speakers. Sean Kelly MEP has made a significant impression in Brussels since he was elected to the European Parliament in 2009. As a former President of the Gaelic Athletic Association, the largest sporting organisation in Ireland and one of the most successful amateur sporting organisations in  the EU, Sean is ideally placed to comment on the issue of how sport impacts on European society and how the EU can best exercise its new competence in this area. Packie Bonner is certainly well-known for his exploits on the football field, not least his efforts in goal for Ireland in two World Cups. However, as Technical Director of the Football Association of Ireland, he is also ideally placed to comment on how the EU can develop its role in the area of sport. Finally, Jonathan Hill is a member of the cabinet of Commissioner Androulla Vassiliou, the Commissioner  responsible for developing the EU's competences as regards sport. Prior to joining the Commissioner's cabinet, Jonathan was Head of the EU Office of UEFA. His insights into the subject matter of the debate are sure to be fascinating.

This event was open to members and friends of the IIEA. We particularly welcomed newcomers and members of sporting organisations.
We would be grateful if you could inform us if you wish to attend future Brussel Brnach events at (email: iieabrusselsbranch@gmail.com ).

We would like to thank the Permanent Representation of Ireland for their support in organising this event.
