Before his address, we asked Philip Lowe how the EU's energy policies relate to the quest to kick start European growth. You can watch Philip Lowe's video response here.

About the Speech:

The eagerly anticipated Energy Roadmap 2050 will be published by the European Commission before the end of 2011. It will examine scenarios for the revolution in energy systems which will be required to deliver an 80-90% reduction in emissions and a 90% decarbonisation of the EU power sector by 2050, while meeting the objectives of energy security, sustainability and competitiveness.

On 10 November 2011, Director General for DG Energy, Philip Lowe of the European Commission gave a keynote address on the EU’s Energy Roadmap 2050.  He situated his speech in the context of the International Energy Agency’s World Energy Outlook 2011, which states that if ‘the world does not change direction, we will end up where we are heading’ to a catastrophic rise in global mean temperature by six degrees above pre-industrial levels.

Philip Lowe emphasized that energy efficiency is the low hanging fruit in terms of meeting Europe’s 20-20-20 targets. He suggested that using energy better is an issue of competitiveness and that we should reduce our use of energy in Europe by 30 or 40 percent.

The European Energy Roadmap 2050 provides a qualitative and quantitative assessment of energy mixes and models the potential paths of progression to reach Europe’s 2050 goals.  Philip Lowe highlighted issues of concern to European energy policy such as streamlining permitting procedures for renewable energy and the need for creation of the internal energy market and for uniform support mechanisms for renewable energy technology in the internal energy market. The EU’s Energy Roadmap 2050 is to be adopted on 13 December 2011.

This event forms part of the ESB Energy Ireland Series which is kindly sponsored by ESB.

About the Speaker:

Philip Lowe was appointed as Director-General of the European Commission's Energy DG in February 2010. He has previously served as Director-General for Development and Competition at the European Commission.
